Shortly before 4 p.m., the National Weather Service?s Storm Prediction Center issued a severe thunderstorm warning for portions of Beaufort, Colleton, Charleston and Jasaper counties until 5 p.m.
At 3:57 p.m., Doppler radar indicatedsevere thunderstormsalong a line extending from Sheldon to
Pritchardville in Beaufort County. The storms were moving east at 40 mph, the Weather Service said.
Residents in the affected area should prepare for damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.
About an hour earlier, the Weather Service had issued a tornado watch for portions of southern and eastern South Carolina and its coastal waters until 9 p.m. tonight.
Tornadoes, with hail, high wind gusts and dangerous lightning are possible in the watch area, the Weather Service said.
Areas in the watch area include Beaufort, Charleston, Edisto Beach, Hampton, Hilton Head, Jasper, Moncks Corner,
Ridgeland, St. George, Summerville and Walterboro.
The watch area is approximately along and 40 miles either side of a line from 80 miles southwest of Charleston to
45 miles east northeast the city.
Remember, a tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings.
Slight rotation was detected in the line of storms in Beaufort County, the Weather Service said. Should that rotation strengthen, a tornado warning will be issued.
