John Wiggins Digs Backyard Mine as 'Memorial ... - AOL Real Estate

John Wiggins' backyard mine

An English homeowner has given new meaning to the phrase "it's all mine!" John Wiggins (pictured above) spent 13 years digging a mine below his backyard garden in the village of Skelton Green in northeastern England. He employed such precision and attention to detail that the replica mine looks like one you might find a mile below ground in the Appalachians -- but his is only 15 feet down.

Wiggins explained to the Darlington and Stockton Times newspaper in Weybridge, England, that his interest in ancient ruins combined with a love for local mining history in the larger English town of Cleveland motivated him in the painstaking project.

"I moved in here 15 years ago," said the 68-year-old painter. "I started to become interested in local history, and this part of the world is notorious for its mining background."

The area was home to 100 iron mines in the 1800s, but by the 1960s most of them were shut down.

"I visited a mine nearby in North Skelton," Wiggins continued, "and it was an experience I'll never forget. But it made me want to preserve Cleveland's identity, so, as you do, I decided to dig up the garden."

He used a backhoe to dig out the 150-foot-long corridor of his model mine. Inside is a railway that he built for a makeshift tram to carry ironstone. Using reclaimed materials from local builders and markets, he built the walls of the mine and two headstocks that serve as the shafts where workers and ironstone would be lifted out of the mine. The whole thing is ventilated to prevent water from flooding the mine and allow fresh air and a little light inside.

The last part of the project that Wiggins has left to complete is a mine office.

"I want it to look authentic, like it's from the 1840s," Wiggins said. "I want it to look abandoned, as if miners just up and left. ... Everything is an exact version of what was in the smaller old mines. I've consulted experts, used my own knowledge of ironstone mines and read a lot of old books to get everything accurate."

According to the British tabloid, The Sun, it cost Wiggins "thousands of pounds" to create the mine.

He called his underground masterpiece a "memorial ... to the ironstone miners of Cleveland" and said that he wasn't aware of anything else like it in the area. He added that he is willing to offer free tours of his mine to those interested in learning more about the town's mining history.

While Wiggins built a model of a historic treasure on his property, a real age-old find was discovered in a home in the nearby English town of Plymouth earlier this year. In August, homeowner Colin Steer discovered a 33-foot-deep well under his living room floor that dates to the 16th century.

Canada's First Childhood Obesity Program Targets Unhealthy ...

From The Globe and Mail?..

Neema Martelly has trouble sleeping through the night ? and it has nothing to do with monsters hiding under her bed. At just four years of age, she suffers from a disorder more typical of middle-aged overweight men: sleep apnea, a symptom of obesity.

Luckily for Neema, she lives within reach of what is believed to be Canada?s first obesity treatment program tailored specifically for children under six. Through it, she?s discovered a love for twirling around practising ballet, learned to try the broccoli, carrots and (reluctantly) lettuce on her dinner plate, and found that dancing the hokey-pokey on her living-room floor brings more laughs than whiling away the evening on the couch.

Neema is among six young children and their families who are part of a unique collaboration between the Hospital for Sick Children and Toronto Public Health that focuses on getting an often-overlooked age group onto a healthier track. What started as intensive group sessions with health professionals over the summer has continued with regular meet-ups at the hospital, and, most importantly, a monthly home visit from a public health nurse to advise parents on healthy behaviours and monitor progress.

As many as 14 per cent of Canadian children between the ages of three and five are overweight, and another 6 per cent are obese ? frightening statistics, especially when considering the future health-care burden. There is a likelihood that without strong interventions these young children will remain obese into adulthood, and, as a result, are at increased risk for a host of health problems, including diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Doctors are discovering that tackling the obesity epidemic requires zeroing in on Neema?s age group ? and perhaps even starting much earlier, in utero. It?s not without controversy: Few parents recognize their pudgy child has a weight issue, even if he or she is obese, studies show. Changing those attitudes requires programs that fixate less on obesity and more on healthy-active living, doctors say.

?I?ve never seen a health topic be so engaging to physicians and the community at large,? said Catherine Birken, a pediatrician at Sick Kids who spearheaded the pilot program with some provincial funding. ?The cardiologists are now focusing on early childhood. Everyone is turning their attention to early childhood. The evidence shows that the earlier you start helping families develop healthy behaviour, the more likely those behaviours will persist through the child?s life.?

(AP) ? No. 1 Indiana had something to prove Tuesday night ? that it could play defense.

Just two days after the Hoosiers put together their best game this season, they delivered an even more impressive performance, getting 20 points from Cody Zeller and 19 each from Will Sheehey and Victor Oladipo, running away from No. 14 North Carolina 83-59 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

"Our guys played great basketball tonight," coach Tom Crean said. "We played against an incredible opponent, everybody understands how great North Carolina is. Our guys had an edge to them tonight, and it was on the defensive end as much as anything else."

The conventional wisdom is that the Hoosiers (7-0) are one of the nation's top scoring teams.

But the detractors have questioned Indiana's willingness to defend and some have even suggested that weakness has allowed No. 2 Duke to close the gap on the nation's top-ranked team.

North Carolina coach Roy Williams disagrees.

"I think they are," he said when asked whether Indiana deserved to be No. 1. "The thing I like about them is they really are a team. They don't have one guy that beats you up, they beat you so many different ways."

Williams and the Tar Heels (5-2) learned that lesson the hard way in Bloomington.

In the second half, the Tar Heels shot just 27.8 percent from the field and went 0 for 5 from 3-point range. They were outscored 12-8 on the fast break, an area that had caused so much concern for Crean that he lost sleep leading up to the game.

"I know people criticize us for our defense, and they say 'If they can't play defense, how good can they really be?'" Oladipo said.

Offensively, the Hoosiers were their usual balanced selves.

Zeller was 8 of 13 from the field with four blocks, one steal and an assist. Oladipo and Sheehey were both 8 of 12 from the field. Senior guard Jordan Hulls was 5 of 8, including three 3-pointers, and finished with 13 points, eight assists and two steals.

"It's cool," Oladipo said when asked about beating a program like North Carolina this handily. "I mean, we've been working really hard and you guys know as well as I know that this program, well not last year, but over the last couple of years was really struggling and we wanted to get it back to where it belongs, which is on top. So to get a win like that, it's a humbling experience."

The best thing about this game for North Carolina may be the end of its run against teams from the Hoosier State.

A week ago, North Carolina trailed by 29 points in the second half before falling 82-71 to two-time national runner-up Butler.

On Tuesday, it was almost an instant replay.

Indiana closed the first half fast, started the second half fast and spent the rest of the game pulling away. The Hoosiers' biggest lead, 83-51, came with 4:22 left in the game.

Dexter Strickland led the Tar Heels with 14 points, Marcus Paige had 11 and James Michael McAdoo had 10 points and nine rebounds for North Carolina, which was missing sophomore guard P.J. Hairston, who stayed home with a sprained left knee.

There was a bigger problem, though. North Carolina couldn't figure out how to contain Zeller, one of this season's favorites to be the national player of the year.

"Boy, I would love to watch them play if it wasn't against my team," Williams said. "You look down the lineup and Cody Zeller, he's family to begin with, he's really a load to handle, and two other guys that I didn't even hear of when they were in high school, they just kicked our rear ends."

The game pitting two of the country's most storied programs ? which have combined for 10 national titles and 3,767 wins ? had been billed as one of this season's showcase events. For 16 minutes, it lived up to the hype.

Zeller changed everything with two flurries.

By setting high picks and drawing post players outside, it opened up the lanes for his cutting and slashing teammates who wasted no time exploiting the holes in the Carolina defense, using a 15-6 run at the end of the first half to take a 46-37 halftime lead.

The Hoosiers were only getting started.

"If you let them dictate and control the pace of the game, they're going to win," Crean said. "So we had to control and dictate the pace of the game, and to do that, we had to run."

But in the second half, the Hoosiers were out to prove something else ? that they could defend.

Over the first 8? minutes, North Carolina managed only three points, the tip-in and a free throw.

Zeller and Oladipo, meanwhile, combined for seven points in the opening 13-0 blitz that put Indiana ahead 59-37, and North Carolina never challenged again as the Hoosiers won their 34th consecutive home game in November against a team that was supposed to cause havoc.

"It's a huge statement," Sheehey said. "We prepared for this game for a couple of weeks now and that's about it. You saw the score. We played hard, we played well, we played together and when we do that, stuff is going to happen."

Parting Schotts: Union's Mat Bodie close to returning; RPI's Lee, McGowan out

Some injury updates on the Union and RPI hockey teams:

? Union junior defenseman Mat Bodie could be back sooner than expected from his broken left wrist.

Dutchmen coach Rick Bennett said on Wednesdat that Bodie's status is now day-to-day. Bodie, the Dutchmen's captain, had been expected to be out until after the Christmas break.

Bodie broke the wrist on the first shift of the game against RPI Nov. 2. He has missed the last five games.

"It's not as bad as before," Bennett said. "Will you see him in the lineup Friday night [against Quinnipiac]? I don't know yet. Is it a possibility? Yes, it's a possibility. But we're just not sure yet."

Bennett isn't surprised by how fast Bodie is healing.

"He's like the wolverine. He heals quickly," Bennett said. "He's got this skeletal system that's just different from everybody else in the country. He's going to heal quickly."

? Dutchmen junior left winger Cole Ikkala is most likely out this weekend with a lower-body injury. He was hurt in Sunday's game against Penn State.

? Over at RPI, the Engineers will be without at least two of their players for their games against Princeton and Quinnipiac this weekend.

Senior forward and team captain CJ Lee (back, knee) won't be back until after Christmas. Also out is sopohmore forward Mark McGowan, who has mono.

RPI coach Seth Appert said forwards Brock Higgs, Johnny Rogic and Zach Schroeder are questionable.

The Engineers have been off since beating Mercyhurst, 4-1, Nov. 17.

"We'll be just fine," Appert said. "We've got plenty of guys in that locker room, and the guys that play have to deliver, and they've got to step up and they've got to take ownership of their opportunity."

Local real estate broker keeps his employees fit through unique ...

Bill Gladstone begins his workout wearing a crisp white shirt, dress slacks and shiny leather shoes. A wireless earpiece keeps him connected to his cellphone.

Gladstone is a Lemoyne-based commercial real estate broker. Several of his employees stand nearby, watching the boss warm up.

Like many small-business owners, Gladstone continually wrestles with employee health care costs.

He plunged into fitness a few years ago. Now he?s a devotee of a routine offered at Synchrony ChiroCare in East Pennsboro Township.

He hopes his employees buy into it as well ? so much that he pays their monthly fees and allows them to go during work time.

In his mind, even 10 minutes a week is better than nothing.

Gladstone?s first exercises take place on a power plate. The machine resembles a treadmill, but has a round platform that vibrates 40 times per second while Gladstone?s feet remain stationary.

?Some people call this the microwave of exercise,? says Michael Bennese, the chiropractor who owns Synchrony ChiroCare and who designed Gladstone?s workout.

The power plate concept was invented 40 years ago by Russian scientists trying to enable astronauts to stay fit and avoid bone loss while in outer space.

According to Bennese, each vibration causes the muscles to contract and relax. At 40 times per second, this results in an intense workout involving many muscles, including the core.

Gladstone does a handful of sets, each one lasting about 10 seconds. One involves keeping his shoulders back and chest out as he presses his upper back against a post while the power plate vibrates.

During another, called the bird dog, he supports himself on one hand and one knee, with the opposite limbs outstretched, as the machine vibrates.

Growing popularity?

Power plate equipment has become popular in gyms in recent years and has been touted by celebrities including Madonna.

According to Bennese, who is certified in biomechanics, many professional athletes do training that involves the power plate.

But he says nonathletes, including older people, can benefit from a power plate-centered routine that takes as little as 15 minutes per week.

The intense vibrations, he says, cause a high percentage of the available muscles to become involved.

The benefits of a brief routine can include the ability to engage in physical activities longer before fatigue sets in.

For people who are older, it can improve the ability to walk or stand for long periods without getting a sore back, do yard work, or pick up a grandchild, Bennese says.

Gladstone, whose clothes are unrumpled and who hasn?t broken a sweat, moves on to his next exercises.

These involve four exercises on two machines. With each exercise, he presses or pulls as hard as he can for five seconds. An electronic screen shows how much force he generates, and compares it to previous workouts.

The overall routine is called ?BStrong4Life,? which claims to improve strength, posture and overall health in less then 30 minutes per week.

Gladstone?s routine involves other exercises, as well as chiropractic treatment.

He doesn?t ask his employees to do the same routine. Theirs is more basic, taking only about 10 minutes.

Providing health benefits

?Gladstone, 63, says providing good health benefits has always been a high priority.

But rising health insurance premiums have forced him to shop for new coverage each year and shift costs to employees in the form of deductibles and co-pays, he says.

All the while, he has tried to invest in employees? wellness, hoping he will benefit in the form of lower health care bills and higher productivity. He says he also hopes to help his employees improve their overall well-being and ability to enjoy their nonworking hours.

Gladstone has long paid toward gym memberships, giving employees up to $500 per year toward gym expenses if they go at least twice per week.

The economic downturn forced him to withdraw the gym membership perk for a few years, but he has restored it.

To that end, he decided to also offer Bennese?s program. It?s voluntary; four of his five employees opted to participate.

In Gladstone?s case, he?s convinced the training has enhanced a fitness routine he launched several years ago.

Focusing on posture?

For many years, Gladstone?s life involved long work hours and little physical activity.

Finally, he began working out at a gym and discovered he felt better.

Then Gladstone, who says he typically rises by 4 a.m. and works into the evening, wanted a way for he and his wife to spend more time together.

They chose ballroom dancing, which gave another boost to his fitness routine.

However, dance instructors continually told him to stand up straight, a position he found he could no longer maintain.

That led him to Bennese, the chiropractor, who took images of Gladstone?s spine and found it had become curved in a way that caused Gladstone?s head to hang too far forward.

Bennese conducted a basic exam in which he examined the alignment of the head over the rib cage, the rib cage over the pelvis and the hips over the feet.

If any of those relationships are out of whack, muscles get overstressed, leading to pain and other physical problems, he says.

?If that is happening, the body is coping by using excessive muscle contractions to hold that body part up,? he says.

Standing straighter?

After several months, Gladstone says he feels stronger and better and stands straighter.

?You don?t want to be hunched over as you get older. It?s bad for business. It?s bad for your health,? he says.

His employees, who have been doing their routines for more than a month, don?t claim dramatic changes, although they say they?ve noticed benefits.

Mostly, they say it has been helpful to learn about the importance of posture and become aware of deficiencies in their postures and how to improve it.

?It?s cool to see how you increase each week,? says Leah Wentz, 29, referring to the exercises that involve mustering as much force as possible for 5 to 10 seconds.

Chuck Bender, 29, says he?s ?new to fitness,? and began a running routine a few months ago.

He says he?s noticed some increased definition in his muscles and will consider moving to a more involved routine.

Katie Warrell, 29, Gladstone?s daughter, goes to the gym regularly, where she runs and does aerobics and a strength routine.

She says she has learned from Bennese?s program.

?It definitely made me more attuned to my posture at work and at home,? she says.

Gladstone can only hope they?ll stick with this routine ? or any routine that leads to improved health and well-being.

He says he has achieved one goal.

?When I take an interest in them, they take an interest in their work,? he says.?

Ancient microbes found living beneath the icy surface of Antarctic lake

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? This week a pioneering study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and co-authored by Dr. Alison Murray and Dr. Christian Fritsen of Nevada's Desert Research Institute (DRI) reveals, for the first time, a viable community of bacteria that survives and ekes out a living in a dark, salty and subfreezing environment beneath nearly 20 meters of ice in one of Antarctica's most isolated lakes.

Lake Vida, the largest of several unique lakes found in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, contains no oxygen, is mostly frozen and possesses the highest nitrous oxide levels of any natural water body on Earth. A briny liquid that is approximately six times saltier than seawater percolates throughout the icy environment that has an average temperature of minus 13.5 degrees centigrade (or 8 degrees Fahrenheit).

"This study provides a window into one of the most unique ecosystems on Earth," said Murray, the report's lead author, and molecular microbial ecologist and polar researcher for the past 17 years, who has participated in 14 expeditions to the Southern Ocean and Antarctic continent. "Our knowledge of geochemical and microbial processes in lightless icy environments, especially at subzero temperatures, has been mostly unknown up until now. This work expands our understanding of the types of life that can survive in these isolated, cryoecosystems and how different strategies may be used to exist in such challenging environments."

Despite the very cold, dark and isolated nature of the habitat, the report finds that the brine harbors a surprisingly diverse and abundant assemblage of bacteria that survive without a present-day source of energy from the sun. Previous studies of Lake Vida dating back to 1996 indicate that the brine and its' inhabitants have been isolated from outside influences for more than 3,000 years.

Murray and her co-authors and collaborators, including the project's principal investigator Dr. Peter Doran of the University of Illinois at Chicago, developed stringent protocols and specialized equipment for their 2005 and 2010 field campaigns to sample the lake brine while avoiding contaminating the pristine ecosystem.

To sample the unique environment researchers worked under secure, sterile tents on the lake's surface to keep the site and equipment clean as they drilled ice cores, collected samples of the salty brine residing in the lake ice and then assessed the chemical qualities of the water and its potential for harboring and sustaining life, in addition to describing the diversity of the organisms detected.

Geochemical analyses suggest that chemical reactions between the brine and the underlying iron-rich sediments generate nitrous oxide and molecular hydrogen. The latter, in part, may provide the energy needed to support the brine's diverse microbial life.

"It's plausible that a life-supporting energy source exists solely from the chemical reaction between anoxic salt water and the rock," explained Fritsen, a systems microbial ecologist and Research Professor in DRI's Division of Earth and Ecosystem Sciences.

"If that's the case," echoed Murray. "This gives us an entirely new framework for thinking of how life can be supported in cryoecosystems on earth and in other icy worlds of the universe."

Murray added further research is currently under way to analyze the abiotic, chemical interactions between the Lake Vida brine and the sediment, in addition to investigating the microbial community by using different genome sequencing approaches. The results could help explain the potential for life in other salty, cryogenic environments beyond Earth.

The Lake Vida brine also represents a cryoecosystem that is a suitable and accessible analog for the soils, sediments, wetlands, and lakes underlying the Antarctic ice sheet that other polar researchers are just now beginning to explore.

Any good self-improvement books to recommend?? - General ...

I don't mean books specifically tailored towards Aspergers, like "Aspergers on the Job" or that sort of thing...but rather, books that you have found helpful to overcome some of your challenges. For me, Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" was a great read - my Dad recommended this to me in the late 90s shortly before my Dx - and I found a lot of valuable lessons that I was able to put into practice. Such as, the power of praise, being discrete about tcertain things, how to deal with situations perceived as unfair in a tactful manner, and avoiding correcting those who stated something incorrectly (esp. in front of their peers and what not). These were lessons I could, and did, apply well b/c they didn't necessarily involve spontaneous processing of the big picture / situations, so I could handily incorporate them into my behaviours.

That book has been around for a while, but its lessons are still very much valid. Very Happy

Another one I haven't yet read, but mean to someday, is Stephen Covey's 7 Habits. The one in particular about "Begin with the end in mind" and "put first things first" could help with executive dysfunction or being guided by the "why" of a situation (but again, maybe not so much the dynamic or spontaneous/unplanned aspects of it).

Granted, many of these self-improvement books are written with neurotypical audiences in mind, but I believe there is always some lesson to be garnered which is applicable to us Aspies. Since we have an innate love of learning. It's just applying the knowledge that can be tricky sometimes.

So, if you have any such book recommendations in mind (and how they helped you) - I'd love to hear your recoms & opinions!!

Column: Johnny Football should be Johnny Heisman

Johnny Football finally got a chance to speak Monday.

This was it, our first opportunity to hear from the quarterback himself why he feels he should win the Heisman Trophy.

Turns out, he's not much of a lobbyist.

Off the charts when he's got that ol' pigskin in his hands, Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel sounds like just another boring QB when asked about his chances of becoming the first freshman to claim college football's highest individual honor.

He says it would be "a dream come true." (Boooring!) He says "whatever is meant to happen will happen." (Give this man an award for clich?s.) He deflects credit to his teammates and coaches, pointing out time and time again that none of his success would be possible without those around him. (Wake us when he's done.)

That's OK. Nothing more really needs to be said.

Johnny Football, meet Johnny Heisman.

With a nod to Notre Dame defensive star Manti Te'o, a dominating linebacker with a bittersweet back story, Manziel's numbers are simply too outlandish to be denied.

? He's rushed for 1,181 yards and 19 touchdowns.

? He's thrown for 3,419 yards and another two dozen TDs.

? He's already surpassed Cam Newton's totals from two years ago by 273 yards (in two fewer games), and the former Auburn quarterback won the award in a landslide.

Manziel deserves a similar rout.

"The way Johnny has performed this season, the numbers speak for themselves," said Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin, who had barred Manziel from talking to reporters until Monday. "He's a tremendous competitor, a tremendous leader. That's something you really don't see in a player as a redshirt freshman. But all his leadership ? on and off the field, all throughout the season ? made our season a real special one."

Sumlin's policy of denying media privileges to all his freshmen, even those like Manziel who are in their second year of school, has only added to the mystique.

Here was a guy with the cool nickname and enough highlights to fill his own YouTube channel, but we didn't really know anything else about him other than what was in the biography. The small-town Texas kid who initially committed to Oregon but really wanted to play in the Lone Star State, who signed with the Aggies when Mike Sherman was the coach but didn't get a chance to play until Sumlin took over the job.

Otherwise, our impressions were formed by what he did with the helmet on.

How he ran circles around opposing defenses, how he threw touchdown passes off the wrong foot, how he chased down and tackled two Louisiana Tech players after a turnover, how he led the Aggies to a surprising 10-win season in their Southeastern Conference debut, including an upset of mighty Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Now, after an hour-long conference call with media from all over the country, we know a little more.

Manziel is cool with the nickname. He enjoys playing video games, including the college football version, though apparently not so much as himself. He's still getting used to all the attention he receives when he does something as simple as going out to dinner.

"I don't see myself as Johnny Football. I see myself as Johnathan Manziel," he says. "When people want to take my picture or ask for an autograph, I'm shocked by it. I'm not used to the whole thing, even though it's kind of becoming a daily thing."

He tries to avoid watching highlights of himself, like the ones posted in countless tribute videos, or the more humorous attempts to pay homage to his growing legend. No, he hasn't seen the video by the woman old enough to be his mother, who croons to the camera with her own version of early-1960s hit "Johnny Angel" while surrounded by Aggies gear.

"Johnny Football, how we love him," she warbles. "He's got something Aggies can't resist. And he doesn't even know impossible exists."

In other seasons, when the race wasn't so clear-cut, Te'o might've been positioned to join Charles Woodson as only the second defensive player to capture the Heisman.

The Notre Dame senior certainly has the stats to back up his candidacy (103 tackles and seven interceptions), but there's so much more to his resume.

He's the undisputed leader on the nation's top-ranked team, a major reason the Fighting Irish went unbeaten in the regular season for the first time since 1988 and landed a spot in the national championship game against either Alabama or Georgia. It's hard not to shed a tear every time he makes a big play, either, remembering how he's still dealing with the grief of losing both his grandmother (who died after a long illness) and his girlfriend (who succumbed to leukemia) just a few hours apart on an awful day back in September.

A special season, to be sure.

But Manziel's debut season goes beyond that. It's transformational, like the first time you saw Herschel Walker flatten a defensive back, or Michael Vick cutting this way and that on one play, then unleashing a 70-yard pass on the next.

It's beyond Heisman-worthy.

"This is something you dream about as a kid," Manziel said. "When you're playing those NCAA (video) games as a kid, you create players who can win the Heisman by putting up some crazy numbers."

When he used to dream up his perfect player for that make-believe world, it looked more like Newton.

You know, 6-foot-6, about 250 pounds, stronger and faster than anyone else on the field.

In real life, Manziel didn't turn out that way. He's just a smidgen over 6-foot. He tips the scales at around 200 pounds. Solid, but not imposing.

"I did get tackled a couple of times and heard people say, 'You're really small' or 'You're not as big as we thought,'" Manziel conceded.

Turns out, he was better than the guy on the video game.

The one with the Heisman.

'Two and a Half Men' actor calls his show 'filth'

(AP) ? The teenage actor who plays the half in the hit CBS comedy "Two and a Half Men" says in a video posted online by a Christian church that the show is "filth" and that viewers shouldn't watch it.

Nineteen-year-old Angus T. Jones has been on the show, which used to feature bad-boy actor Charlie Sheen and remains heavy with sexual innuendo, since he was 10 but says he doesn't want to be on it anymore.

"Please stop watching it," Jones said. "Please stop filling your head with filth."

Jones plays Jake, the son of Jon Cryer's uptight divorced chiropractor character, Alan, and the nephew of Sheen's hedonistic philandering music jingle writer character, Charlie. Sheen, who has publicly criticized CBS, was fired and replaced by Ashton Kutcher, who plays billionaire Walden.

In the video posted by the Forerunner Christian Church in Fremont, Calif., Jones describes a search for a spiritual home. He says the type of entertainment he's involved in adversely affects the brain and "there's no playing around when it comes to eternity."

"You cannot be a true God-fearing person and be on a television show like that," he said. "I know I can't. I'm not OK with what I'm learning, what the Bible says, and being on that television show."

CBS and producer Warner Bros. Television had no comment Monday.

"Two and a Half Men" survived a wild publicity ride less than two years ago, when Sheen was fired for his drug use and publicly complained about the network and the show's creator, Chuck Lorre. Sheen later said he wasn't still angry at the sitcom's producers and the network and acknowledged he would have fired himself had he been in their shoes.

The show was moved from Monday to Thursday this season, and its average viewership has dropped from 20 million an episode to 14.5 million, although last year's numbers were somewhat inflated by the intense interest in Kutcher's debut. It is the third most popular comedy on television behind CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" and ABC's "Modern Family."

The actors on "Two and a Half Men" have contracts that run through the end of this season.

Posting Legal Jargon to Facebook Does Not Protect You From ...

A word of advice: When dabbling in legal matters, consult an actual lawyer.

I?m speaking of that jargon-filled status update that ? if your friends are anything like mine ? keeps popping up in users? Facebook news feeds.

It?s a blanket disclaimer which essentially claims copyright on all things posted to Facebook, including items like photos ? Facebook users? stock-in-trade, these days ? status updates, and works of art, and demands Facebook can only use that material after being given ?written consent? by the user. Here?s a snippet:

In response to the new Facebook guidelines, I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details contained in my personal and business profiles, including, but not limited to: all postings, status updates, comments, illustrations, paintings, drawings, art, photographs, music, videos, etc. as per the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, (a/k/a the Berne Convention). For commercial use of any of the above, my written consent is required in each instance and at all times.

It?s most likely a response to Facebook?s recently announced changes to dealing with privacy policies on the site. Instead of putting any changes to a massive, billion-user, network-wide vote as is decorum, Facebook seeks to end the policy and start making those decisions in a different way.

There?s a problem here. By virtue of becoming a Facebook user, you?ve already signed over consent to let Facebook republish your work wherever it wants. And that includes alongside the myriad ads flanking the sides of your page.

You know that block of text you skipped reading upon signing up for your Facebook account? There are actually important details embedded therein. Namely that you?ve already granted Facebook a ?a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License).?

Don?t fret. You still retain copyright on anything you post to Facebook. Just not the right to ban it from the licenses you?ve already agreed to. It didn?t work the last time these status updates were circulating, and it won?t work now.

So do us all a favor and, next time, Snopes that bogus rumor first. I?m tired of seeing the same thing in my feed.

Researchers Investigating Self-Boosting Vaccines

An anonymous reader writes "Vaccines, contrary to opinions from the anti-science crowd, are some of the most effective tools in modern medicine. For some diseases, a single shot is all it takes for lifetime immunity. Others, though, require booster shots, to remind your immune system exactly what it should prepare to fight. Failure to get these shots threatens an individual's health, and the herd immunity concept as well. Scientists are now looking into 'self-boosting' vaccines in order to fix that problem. Some viruses are capable of remaining in the body for a person's entire lifetime. If researchers can figure out a way to safely harness these, it may be possible to add genes that would create proteins to train the immune system against not just one, but multiple other viruses (abstract). This is a difficult problem to solve; changing the way we do vaccinations will itself have consequences for herd immunity. It also hinges on finding a virus that can survive the immune system without having uncomfortable flare-ups from time to time."

Honduras busts alleged drug gang, seizes $100 million in assets

TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - Honduran anti-drug agents on Saturday broke up an alleged gang of synthetic drug producers and seized $100 million in assets, a government spokesman said.

Anti-drug trafficking agents carried out raids on 24 sites in the northern part of the country, seizing 700 heads of cattle and 150 vehicles in one of the biggest organized crime seizures in the last decade, spokesman Carlos Vallecillo said.

Vallecillo said the group laundered money through companies and property, but did not specify which drug cartel the group belonged to.

The agents detained a local police official, a Honduran civilian, and two Colombian pilots, he added.

The Mexican government's campaign to tame its drug cartels has driven Mexican drug traffickers to set up shop in Honduras. Colombian Cartels also operate in the country.

Criminal violence in the Central American nation has escalated thanks in part to the Mexican cartels' presence. According to the United Nations, Honduras has the highest per capita homicide rate in the world, with 86 homicides for every 100,000 inhabitants.

Manning sharp as Broncos beat Chiefs 17-9

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? You won't get much argument from Broncos coach John Fox about the value of a solid starting quarterback. You probably won't get much from Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel, either.

Not after they stood on opposing sidelines and watched Peyton Manning go to work.

The four-time MVP was wooed by both franchises when he was cut loose by Indianapolis, but he never gave Kansas City much thought. Instead, he signed with its AFC West rival, and is now putting together one of the best seasons of his career for Denver, all while Kansas City flounders behind the revolving door of Brady Quinn and Matt Cassel.

The difference on Sunday was striking: Manning threw for 285 yards with touchdowns to Jacob Tamme and Demaryius Thomas in a 17-9 victory, the Broncos' sixth straight. Quinn threw for just 126 yards with an interception as Kansas City lost its eighth straight game.

"Peyton Manning is a Hall of Famer," Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson said. "We played pretty good as a defense most of the game, but he made a few plays, one or two more plays than we'd like him to make, and he came up with a victory."

It allowed Manning to break a tie with his boss and Broncos vice president John Elway with his 149th win as a starting quarterback, trailing only Brett Favre (186) for most in NFL history.

Naturally, Manning was quick to pass the praise to someone else.

In this case, it was Knowshon Moreno, who ran for 85 yards after stepping into the starting lineup this week after Willis McGahee landed on injured reserve.

"I've got to tip my hat to Knowshon Moreno," Manning said. "He stepped up today and did a heck of a job. Really an impressive effort by him."

Not so much by the Chiefs offense.

Jamaal Charles ran for 107 yards, but the Chiefs (1-10) were done in by penalties, missed opportunities and a conservative approach that has not yielded a touchdown since the first quarter against Pittsburgh on Nov. 12, a span of more than 11 quarters and 173 minutes.

They could only manage field goals by Ryan Succop for the second straight game.

"We struggled a bit against the run, but they're a very good run team," Fox said. "Something we work very hard on is the red area, and holding them to three field goals was a key in the game."

Kansas City actually established an early lead for the third straight game on Succop's first-quarter field goal, and seemed to be outplaying Denver (8-3) the entire first half.

They had a chance to go ahead 10-0 when they faced fourth-and-2 at the Denver 4, but Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel elected to kick another field goal against a team that had scored at least 30 points in five straight games, drawing a chorus of boos from the crowd.

"I thought points on the board were important," Crennel said.

Problem was that touchdowns trump field goals.

On the Broncos' final drive of the half, Manning completed five straight passes before finding Tamme on third-and-goal from the Kansas City 7 with 18 seconds left. The touchdown catch, on which the tight end dragged safety Eric Berry into the end zone, gave the Broncos a 7-6 lead and wiped out all the hard work that Kansas City had put in over the first 25 minutes.

"It was huge to get a touchdown there," Manning said.

Denver's Matt Prater missed his second field goal try of the game early in the third quarter, and Succop's 49-yarder gave Kansas City its first second-half lead of the season.

But once again, a failure to get into the end zone proved fatal.

Manning, who surpassed 3,000 yards passing earlier in the day, rode the legs of Moreno into Chiefs territory, and that's when he lobbed a pass over nickelback Jalil Brown and into the hands of Thomas for the go-ahead, 30-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter.

"That was a great catch down the sideline against tight coverage," Manning said.

The Chiefs twice had chances to overcome the 14-9 deficit late in the fourth, but they failed to move the ball after taking over at their own 37. After getting it back, Crennel chose to punt on fourth-and-6 at the Broncos 47 after a series of penalties ruined the drive.

It was their last chance to retake the lead.

Denver tacked on a field goal by Prater in the closing seconds, and after Jacksonville held on to beat Tennessee, the Chiefs were left as the league's only one-win team.

"We're frustrated every week. Every time we get a loss, it's frustrating," Charles said. "I don't know when it's going to stop, but hopefully we can did deep down in our souls and find a way to get out of this."

NOTES: Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster (head/neck) and S Kendrick Lewis (shoulder) left the game with injuries. ... Kansas City was 3 for 14 on third downs. ... Chiefs LB Justin Houston had two sacks. ... Broncos LB Von Miller had his 14th sack of the season.

Content Management Systems And The Art Of Web Designing ...

In web designing, how a website looks is not all that matters. It is also important to make sure that the content of the website, such as images, posts, and links are carefully managed in order to keep the website working properly. This is especially important for businesses who make use of various online advertising and marketing strategies. Companies that rely on internet marketing and commerce often find success if their website becomes popular and receives a large number of visits from potential clients on a daily basis. Apart from regularly featuring interesting, innovative and informative content, an effective business website should also have the support of a content management system, or CMS, in order to work efficiently.

Content management in relation to web designing is essentially defined as the set of processes and technologies that support the collection, managing, storing and publication of information on a given website. For many website design companies, content management systems are an integral part of their business processes. In a number of countries, business are starting to become more aware of the benefits of having CMS services sourced from independent providers. Many CMS companies offer a full range of online marketing and advertising solutions that cater to a whole host of industries. Whether the business is about selling used cars or providing services such as online education or web hosting services, CMS website design companies can help boost sales numbers exponentially.

Many CMS companies provide companies several advantages. For instance, using CMS to manage their websites saves time and effort. Instead of having to upload files using an FTP server, clients can simply log in to their CMS user interface and post their content there. The same holds true if they simply want to make certain changes on their website. Another benefit using the services of CMS companies is the support that is available from the community. There are so many CMS enthusiasts out there that open source plug ins are being developed everyday. Almost all of the CMS companies make it easy to store important details because all the content and the data are stored in a database. All the client needs to do in order to secure and backup their data is to export them. It is even possible to track what content is published, schedule the publishing dates, and automatically remove outdated content. CMS web design companies also make it easier to change the design elements of a website without having to use any HTML codes, because they can use templates to change the different parts of the website such as the header, the sidebars, and the footer, very quickly with minimal effort.

Many companies who engage in online marketing and ecommerce call on the services of CMS Saudi Arabia in order to improve their website's performance. With the influx of web services that are becoming available to more people across the world, more companies are turning to CMS services in order to maximize their website's marketing and advertising potential.

Why Mumbai is so gripped by the status of right-wing Bal Thackeray

Mumbaikars closely followed news that one of their city's most controversial political leaders may be critically ill, resurfacing questions about succession.?

By Vaishnavi Chandrashekhar,?Correspondent / November 15, 2012

Supporters stand in front of large photos of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray outside his residence in Mumbai, India, Thursday. News that Thackery may be critically ill lead to a surge of supporters in thousands outside his residence.

Reports that controversial right-wing leader Bal Thackeray was critically ill put Mumbai on tense hold for much of Thursday while raising questions about the future of his party, the Shiv Sena, which controls the city government and is an important member of India?s opposition group, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

Parts of Mumbai reportedly shut down Thursday in anticipation of trouble from Sainiks, as the members of his party are known, gathered in large numbers near the residence of the Thackerays. By evening, the 86-year-old?s condition was reported to be stable and a parade of the city?s powerful and famous was visiting the leader?s home amid tight security.?

Thackeray's declining health is putting the spotlight on the fragile state of his party,?which has been riddled by succession struggles for more than a decade and has seemed unable to move beyond its founder?s polarizing identity politics.?

In the four decades of its existence, the Shiv Sena has targeted ??sometimes violently???south Indian migrants to the city, Muslims, so-called symbols of?Western culture like Valentine?s Day, and more recently, north Indian migrants. Earlier this month, Mr. Thackeray reiterated his opposition to cricket matches between the Indian and Pakistani teams in a front-page editorial in the party newspaper,?Saamna, asking party activists to stop such matches from being held in the country.

Shiva's Army

A political cartoonist known for his barbed rhetoric, Mr. Thackeray formed the Shiv Sena (Shiva?s Army) in the 1960s in the wake of the successful movement for the formation of the state of Maharashtra with Mumbai as its capital. Not unlike Tammany Hall in New York, the Sena promoted the interests of local Maharashtrians or ?sons of the soil? against the influx of migrant workers to Mumbai, historically India?s most cosmopolitan city and its commercial headquarters, through a network of street cadres.

The Sena?s power grew in the 1970s and 1980s, at the expense of the Communists. Thackeray?s invocation of a proud, native identity especially through the historical figure of Shivaji, a 17th century Hindu Maratha warrior who fought the Muslim Mughals and established a Hindu kingdom, found resonance with disaffected young men at a time of declining industrial jobs. During the ?80s and ?90s, the party members? rough-and-ready tactics gave Thackeray the power to shut down the city.

Online Marketing, Promotion And Prospecting Techniques for ...

When was the last time you attemptedto get potential customers for your business?? What have you do, advertise?? How did that really work out? ?

I?m guessing that because you are looking over this, you are prepared to see a strategy to boost your leads and customers with a amount of internet website marketing.? These days you understand advertising doesn?t always come up with the way you expected, and you will have to pay extra for it whether you get results or not!

A while ago, I had been inside same position, having blown a wad of dough on ads, and watching my company decrease the tubes.? I didnrrrt possess any money left for hiring professionals, and considered the time had come to consider things into my hands.? All things considered, I?m a business person together with mastered skills to make three successful businesses.? How hard could Affiliate marketing be?

Well, I had been going to uncover, the difficult way, how much I didnrrrt know.? I did developed marketing and advertising skills over twenty-seven many years of running professional services businesses and stores, however they were inadequate for I wanted to perform online.

I considered myself a rather advanced Internet user, but being an Affilite marketer, I had been a rank novice.? I ended up wasting months floundering around on MySpace and places to waste time, but happened to be absolutely nowhere.? I believed that I were built with a good website, but despite the fact that I really could tell that folks would it, I acquired no company from it.

When I stood back out of this and examined what I was doing, I realized a couple of things:? I didn?t have a very clue the things i was doing wrong, and that i couldn?t know the content wrong with my internet site!? Yuck!

Well, this has been a lengthy road since then.? I got a degree in ways to market businesses online, and also have turned the outcome dramatically.? Along the way, I learned a lot of the complexities of web site design and leads generation, and in addition determined a few very simple steps that anyone can try to promote their businesses online.
Here are three free ones:

1.? Write pr announcements about anything newsworthy pertaining to your online business or industry, and post them online to a free directory.? One I prefer is 24-7pressrelease.com. The releases is often as simple as describing new merchandise, announcing a brand new employee, or describing how you are near the forefront connected with an industry trend.? Online pr releases often show up in pursuit of YEARS as soon as they are posted, and making use of them puts you in control of your company?s image.

2.? Writing articles is yet another good way to receive lasting publicity.? There are many article submission sites to write them on, for free.? One of the larger directories is EzineArticles.com.? Not the same as press releases, the content articles are not about news or events, but may be reviews of items, ?how-to? tips, or anything of great interest to your prospective customers.? Like pr campaigns, these postings will most likely appear in looks for you, your online business, or your industry.

3.? Make videos and post them for nothing on YouTube and several other video hosting sites.? Get in front of the digital camera and talk for a couple minutes about anything interesting in your prospective customers.? Create a group of related videos.? One example is, as a Realtor, focus on neighborhoods, condos, housing styles, etc.? These don?t have to be slick to function.? The full idea os for people to get at know and as if you.

The role of Lure in Greyhound Racing

Temptation is the key driving force behind every action in this world. Like human beings, animals can also be tempted to do one thing or the other. Temptation has a great say in greyhound racing.

One wonders that how a dog or bitch can run in such a cultured and technical way without any cause. It is wonderful to see such animals behaving on race tracks with decency on their own.

There is an interesting story behind this. To make greyhounds break from traps and run on race track, an artificial prey known as Lure is used. This is a stuffed hare powered by electronic motors and driven by a licensed controller.

Before the start of race, the lure is placed at least 12 yards ahead of the starting trap. As soon as traps open, lure starts running and greyhounds seem to be crazy to catch it.

In order to take on stuffed hare, every runner tries to run fast with his/her mouth watered for pseudo prey. The one who has more potential and urge manages to take lead and resultantly wins contest.

All this looks to be fantastic. There are some people who opine that tempting a hound to run for a fake hare is unfair and injustice. They think it a violation of animal rights.

According to them, the owners of greyhounds engineer all this drama just to make money. The supporters of this notion suggest that a runner applies his/her entire strength to chase a prey, but it proves to be fake in the end.

Though this point of view looks somewhat ridiculous in terms of the sport, but it is valid if perceived neutrally.

But there can be no alternative to lure. If the sport organisers start putting real prey in playfields, the same critics will term it an attempt to kill an animal without reason. Here again come animal rights.

So, in a broad perspective, stuffed hare is a key player in greyhound race. It will not be wrong to say that the sport cannot exist without it. Thus, we must have to enjoy this drama as long as we love the sport.
