Weekly Ketchup: Len Wiseman Will Direct the Mummy Reboot

This week's Ketchup includes movie development news for the video game adaptation Spy Hunter, a sort-of-kind-of prequel for The Passion of the Christ, a new version of The Mummy, and new roles for actresses Gina Carano, Dame Judi Dench, Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Hilary Swank.

This Week's Top Story

NEW GIGS FOR THE DIRECTORS OF ZOMBIELAND, MEN IN BLACK, AND UNDERWORLD

In picking the top movie development story for the week, it became something of a three way tie. So we're just going to cover all three stories in this cover story, under the theme of genre directors taking on big (potential) franchises. First up is the long-in-development New Line Cinema adaptation of the 1983 arcade video game Spy Hunter, which has in the past been tackled (unsuccessfully) by directors like John Woo and Paul W. S. Anderson. Spy Hunter is now a project for Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer, whose next film will be the recently delayed Gangster Squad. Next up is the Warner Bros comic book adaptation Lore, which Dwayne Johnson was cast in a few months ago, at which time it was compared to being like Men in Black, but for mythological creatures. Well, the comparison was solidified this week as Warner Bros is now in talks with Barry Sonnenfeld, the director of all three Men in Black movies. Finally, there is the job of directing Universal Pictures' newest reboot of The Mummy, one of their Universal Classic Monsters, which has gone to Len Wiseman, the man behind some of the Underworld movies, and most recently, the remake of Total Recall. It should be noted that just because these three movies were collectively the top stories of the week, it doesn't mean that in any other week they might not be Rotten Ideas. Because they probably would be.

Fresh Developments This Week

#1 ANNE HATHAWAY MIGHT STAR IN STEVEN SPIELBERG'S ROBOPOCALYPSE

With the ambitious biopic Lincoln still a month away from release, director Steven Spielberg is already casting up his adaptation of the Daniel H. Wilson sci-fi novel Robopocalypse, which looks to take Spielberg back to the eye candy that helped establish his career. It's been known for a while that Spielberg had cast Chris Hemsworth (AKA Thor) as the film's lead, but this week, word of two other actors were added to the mix. Although she is not yet officially signed, Anne Hathaway appears to be Spielberg's choice for the female lead. Another likely chosen actor is Ben Whishaw as a hacker named Lurker, in a role that will be seen after Whishaw's appearances in Cloud Atlas and in Skyfall as the new Q. Finally, there's a third addition to the film this week, but it's a newsworthy producer, not a cast member. Tom Rothman, who just last week announced his stepping down as the head of 20th Century Fox, will be joining Steven Spielberg as one of the producers of Robopocalypse. Filming is expected to begin in early 2013, aiming for an April 25, 2014 release date via Disney's Touchstone Pictures.

#2 DAME JUDI DENCH AND THE QUEEN DIRECTOR UNITE FOR ADOPTION DRAMA PHILOMENA

Stephen Frears may hold the title for directing some of the best known and critically acclaimed movies without actually being known by name (in the USA, anyway) himself. Frears' filmography includes Dangeous Liaisons, The Grifters, High Fidelity, My Beautiful Laundrette, and The Queen. Stephen Frears' next film will be an adaptation of the non-fiction book by Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, whose title will be shortened to Philomena. The movie will tell the true story of an Irish teenager who gave birth to a son at a convent in 1952, with the baby eventually being "sold" for adoption to an anonymous family somewhere in the United States. Dame Judi Dench will play Philomena searching for her son 50 years later, who is now a successful Washington, D.C. lawyer with AIDS, also searching for his mother before he dies. Steve Coogan will costar as author Martin Sixsmith himself. Filming will start in November, as a production of Pathe, BBC Films, and Coogan's production company Baby Cow.

#3 STREEP AND SWANK JOIN TOMMY LEE JONES IN THE HOMESMAN

The Homesman is the title of a historical drama to be adapted and directed by Tommy Lee Jones, from a novel by Glendon Swarthout. This week, it was revealed that Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank are also attached to costar along with Tommy Lee Jones. The 19th century drama tells the story of a pioneer couple (Jones and Swank) escorting three insane women across the American prairie (Streep is expected to play one of those women). Tommy Lee Jones has directed a few different movies now, with his feature film debut being 2005's The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. The addition of Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank makes this one his highest profile film as director yet. That wasn't the only Hilary Swank news this week, however. The actress is also set to star in a film called You're Not You, based on a novel by Michelle Wildgen. Swank will play a fatally ill woman who befriends her younger female caretaker (not yet cast). It's expected that Jeremy Renner will also costar as the older professor lover of the young caretaker. You're Not You will be the second feature film for director George C. Wolfe after 2008's Nights in Rodanthe.

#4 TOM HARDY JOINS THE MOUNTAIN CLIMBING BIOPIC EVEREST

This is another story of a successful director casting up his next movie before his previous film is released (and in this case, while that film is still filming). Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity) is currently filming the Tom Cruise sci-fi action movie All You Need is Kill, and his next film will be the mountain climbing biopic Everest, based on the Jeffrey Archer book Paths of Glory. That book tells the true story of different men's attempts in the 1920s to be the first to climb to the top of Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain. Tom Hardy (AKA Bane in The Dark Knight Rises) has signed on to play George Mallory, the British climber that Archer's book claims was successful before Sir Edmund Hillary (the answer that will actually score you a point on a school exam, especially in New Zealand).

#5 HAYWIRE STAR GINA CARANO IS THE FIRST FEMALE EXPENDABLE (OR WHATEVER THEY'LL EVENTUALLY BE CALLED)

Earlier this summer, one of the headlines involved the plans for a female version of The Expendables (which, to be clear, won't be called that, because it's not the same company). This gave pretty much every movie news writer an opportunity to start listing all the classic female action stars they'd like to see in such a film (which usually started with Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton). This week we learned that Haywire breakout star Gina Carano is the first actress to actually officially sign on for the movie, in what is probably closer to the Jason Statham-type role.

#6 MARK MILLAR MAKES HIS MARK MANNING MARVEL (...AT FOX)

One of the most talked about trends in the last 10 years in comic books is the way that specific writers at both DC and Marvel have made huge creative impacts over each company's characters. Specifically, we're thinking here of Grant Morrison and/or Geoff Johns at DC, and Brian Michael Bendis at Marvel (writer of almost every major Marvel arc from 2004 to 2009). This idea of handing one man the keys to the kingdom has also started to expand to the movies, with Christopher Nolan acting as a "godfather" to WB's Man of Steel, and Joss Whedon recently signing on to oversee Marvel Studio's Phase II movies following the success of The Avengers. This week, we learned that another major portion of the movie properties based on Marvel Comics, those whose rights belong to 20th Century Fox, are also now going to be similiarly shepherded. In this case, the job will be going to Mark Millar, the Scottish writer best known for creating the comics that became the feature films Wanted and Kick-Ass. The movie franchises at issue here are Fantastic Four and X-Men (with Daredevil and Elektra likely to revert back to Marvel soon). Soon after the announcement, Mark Millar went online to talk (vaguely) about his own plans for these two seminal and popular comic book movie franchises.

#7 IS JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE GOOD TO THE LAST DROP

Singer-turned-actor Justin Timberlake has landed yet another role, this time in a romantic dramedy called The Last Drop. Timberlake will play "a charming alcoholic working as a restaurant critic for New York Magazine who falls for a young woman and realizes he must overcome his addiction in order to have a relationship with her." The Last Drop was formerly listed on the Black List of Unproduced Screenplays, and was written by newcomers Brandon and Phil Murphy. The Last Drop will be an independent production directed by Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, Raising Victor Vargas).

#8 SIR BEN KINGSLEY MAY PLAY KING HEROD IN THE SORT-OF PREQUEL TO THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST

Although Mel Gibson is entirely uninvolved, Gibson's cowriter on The Passion of the Christ has cowritten a film that is basically a prequel called Mary Mother of Christ, focusing on the time following Christ's birth. Benedict Fitzgerald also cowrote the 1979 John Huston film Wise Blood, and was joined as cowriter of Mary Mother of Christ by Barbara Nicolosi, a former nun. Casting is currently underway, with Sir Ben Kingsley circling the central role of King Herod the Great, the man behind the Massacre of the Innocents that led up to Christ's birth. Mary herself will be played by Israeli actress Odeya Rush (The Odd Life of Timothy Green). Peter O'Toole has been cast as Symeon, and Julia Ormond will play Mary's cousin Elizabeth. The producers are reportedly seeking Dame Judi Dench and Hugh Bonneville to play Anna the Prophetess and Satan, respectively. Mary Mother of Christ will be the second film for director Alister Grierson, who made his feature debut in 2011 with Sanctum, executive produced by James Cameron. Mary Mother of Christ will be executive produced by Pastor Joel Osteen, and distributed by Lionsgate, most likely in 2014.

Rotten Ideas of the Week

#1 NICOLAS CAGE TO STAR IN SOUTHLAND TALES DIRECTOR'S AMICUS

There was a time when writer/director Richard Kelly was considered to be one of the independent scene's most promising new creatives. Namely, that period was after Donnie Darko, and before... pretty much everything else (namely Southland Tales and The Box). People, however, still get warm fuzzies when they hear the words Donnie Darko, and so Richard Kelly continues to be able to get financing for his new films. The latest such project is called Amicus, and it will star Nicolas Cage as an attorney who helps a family filing a lawsuit against a Motown Records executive who hired a Detroit hitman to murder family members for the inheritance. So, yeah, this movie has at least two elements that help make it the Rotten Idea in an otherwise inoffensive week. I pointed out one, I'll let you, the reader, figure out the other.

The advent of dissolvable, biocompatible sutures was a great boon to the biomedical field. Now comes ?bioresorbable electronics including transistors, diodes, wireless power coils, sensors and even a 64-pixel digital camera?, meant to perform their function and then dissolve, leaving no trace within the body.

Mitch Hurwitz Talks Arrested Development

arrested-development-cast-slice-01

Though series creator?Mitch Hurwitz?has stayed mum on many of the plot details regarding the upcoming revival of?Arrested Development, he recently spoke to Vulture about the show, and revealed a few ?spoilers? (brace yourselves for the big reveal: ?Michael walks through a door?).? He also claimed to own?Ron Howard?body and soul, and can force him to do whatever he wants (like come back to narrate the show).? For more about the emotions and excitement on set to bring this great series back, plus other tidbits from the interview, hit the jump.

arrested-development-ron-howard-jason-bateman-mitch-hurwitzRegarding the cast reunion, Hurwitz said that since each of the first episodes all focus on one character, the bulk of the cast did not come together until about two weeks into shooting.? But at that point,

?The day a bigger group of the cast did get together really was amazing. We were in an old set and hearing some of those voices together. I think everyone involved was kind of dumbstruck by it. It really wasn?t supposed to happen in a way; shows don?t ?come back.? And this was the moment we realized it had.?

The creator commented a bit on the plot of these new episodes and how they relate to the eventual Arrested Development movie:

?The episodes are an outgrowth of the design of what we hope will be the movie. They precede it. They function as an act one of a movie that we all want to do, but haven?t ?sold? yet. The episodes take the audience through the experiences of the characters since the family ?fell apart? and how they?re brought together to deal with their new problems.?

Arrested-Development-imageAs for the restoration of the set and whether the Segway would be back:

?One of the lesser known realities of the shrinking television [business] is that studios strip the walls and sell off the props when shows are cancelled. So many of the elements we?re revisiting have needed to be rebuilt or made. So some of the changes are subtle. For instance they discontinued the carpet we used in Lucille?s penthouse as well the one we cut Tobias?s moustache from. But we found a new paisley that works for both. Also the original Segway is out of production so we had to put some old pieces on a new one. But I?ve always been known for my awkward segues. If you get a chance I?d love to get a picture of you as a baby.?

arrested-development-tv-shoow-image-blue-tobias-01Well played, Mitch, well played. As far as the partnership Hurwitz has with Netflix, it seems a particularly happy one:

?The beauty of Netflix is that we theoretically have an opportunity to provide more material for them. We?re definitely shooting some special material just for them. But their whole outlook completely mirrors the ambitions of this show. [Netflix chief content officer] Ted Sarandos and I have really spent a lot of time finding the ideal way to tailor the show to their platform and I think we have something that embraces the new medium.?

In the end, Hurwitz says this really has been about the fans and their (our) cultish devotion:

?We all went back into this because of the devotion of the fans, and a desire to bring some fun to them ? and to ourselves. It definitely did start out being somewhat daunting, but I think for all of us we just got back into the groove. Oh, and we have this new JarJar Bluth character so there?s no way anyone will be disappointed.?

Biden to organized labor: We're with you

(AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden had a simple Labor Day message for unionized workers: Stick with President Barack Obama because the other guys are worse.

Biden told about 3,500 supporters Monday that the Republican ticket of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan would roll back collective bargaining rights, denigrate their work and undermine the slow economic recovery under way.

One of Obama's top ambassadors to the working-class, Biden also sought with his remarks to keep a group of reliably Democratic voters motivated before an Election Day that is shaping up to be close.

"Romney and Ryan don't think that much about you guys," he said at the outdoor rally. "They view you, the working women and men of America as the problem. We view you as the solution. Look folks, we know who built this country and we know who is going to rebuild it. It's you. Instead of vilifying you, we should be thanking you. We owe you."

The Republican candidates supported measures to roll back collective bargaining rights for public union workers in Wisconsin and Ohio. Romney also has been critical of the National Labor Relations Board, accusing it of overstepping its role and suggesting it has become a proxy for Obama's union allies.

Separately, a review of Romney's economic proposals by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center found that wealthier workers would benefit at the expense of the middle class, including many unionized workers.

All that has given Democrats an opening to appeal to populist elements in the party and, perhaps, distract from stubbornly high unemployment nationwide and in North Carolina, where Democrats open their convention Tuesday.

In response, Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg argued that the middle class has been "crushed" by high joblessness, fallen incomes and rising gas prices under Obama.

"Americans aren't better off than they were four years ago, and they deserve a president who recognizes that," she said.

Biden also faulted Romney for opposing the federal bailout of the U.S. auto industry, and criticized Ryan for saying Obama promised to save a GM plant in Ryan's Janesville, Wis., hometown. The plant closed before Obama took office.

Biden said Romney's economic message doesn't add up.

"Folks, you can't say you're going to create jobs in the United States of America when you were willing to let 1 million jobs go under by the liquidation of the automobile plants he suggested," the vice president said.

"Ladies and gentlemen, you, organized labor, are one of the reasons why this country is coming back. Folks, let me make something clear and say it to the press: America is better off today than they left us when they left."

That line was a direct response to the argument the GOP will press during this Democratic convention week, that things are worse off now than they were four years ago when a Republican president left the White House.

"If it weren't so hot ? if it weren't so hot ? I'd go into detail but let me sum it up this way: You want to know whether we're better off? I've got a little bumper sticker for you," Biden said before chanting three times: "Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive."

Supreme Court: Pharmaceutical reps are outside salespersons ...

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that pharmaceutical sales representatives qualify as exempt outside salespeople under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), even though they technically can?t and don?t sell anything.

Key: While this case directly affects drug companies, it could have a wider impact, since the Court also outlined the circumstances under which the Department of Labor?s (DOL) interpretation of the FLSA should be respected. The case is Christopher v. SmithKline Beecham Corp. (U.S.S.Ct., No. 11204, 2012)

When is a sale not a sale?

Federal law and regulations require that only doctors can prescribe drugs to their patients. Pharmaceutical salespeople, therefore, can?t sell their company?s prescription drugs to anyone. Instead, the salespeople, which the pharmaceutical industry calls ?detailers,? visit physicians? offices with the primary goal of obtaining nonbinding commitments from doctors to prescribe their company?s drugs.

The detailers in this case spent 40 hours per week visiting doctors? offices and another 10 to 20 hours per week attending company events and handling other administrative tasks. They were paid a salary and a commission, with their average pay exceeding $70,000. They were not required to punch a time clock.

The detailers sued their employer, alleging that they were entitled to overtime. Employees: The ?outside salespersons? exemption didn?t apply because they didn?t actually sell anything to anyone. Instead, they simply stimulated sales made by others. Company?s defense: The detailers engaged in selling to doctors, who were the only individuals who could prescribe drugs.

One federal appellate ruled in the em?ployer?s favor; another ruled in the employees? favor. The Supreme Court heard the case to settle the ?difference.

When it?s a sale or ?other disposition?

In advance of arguments before the Supreme Court, the DOL filed a friend-of-the-court brief in which, for the first time ever, it took a narrow view of the word ?sale.? DOL: An outside salesperson is only exempt if the sale results in a change of title to property. Therefore, according to the DOL, the pharmaceutical detailers were not exempt outside salespersons.

The Court flatly rejected this interpretation, noting that employers had no notice of the DOL?s new interpretation. It decided that to defer to the DOL?s new interpretation would impose potentially massive liability on the employer for conduct that occurred long before the new interpretation was announced.

Having dispensed with the DOL?s narrow reading of the word ?sale,? the Court ruled that the detailers qualified as outside salespersons under the text of the FLSA and its regulations, which, in addition to covering completed sales, includes exchanges, contracts to sell, a consignment for sale, shipment for sale or other dispositions.

Court: Obtaining nonbinding commitments from doctors to prescribe their company?s drugs was the most the detailers could do. This kind of arrangement, in the unique regulatory environment within which pharmaceutical companies must operate, comfortably falls within the catchall category of ?other disposition,? the Court concluded.

OUTSIDE SALES EXEMPTION: Employers in other industries that use outside salespersons can also benefit from this decision. The FLSA exempts anyone employed in the capacity of an outside salesperson. According to the Court, the FLSA?s emphasis on ?capacity? means that the focus should be on the employee?s functions as an outside salesperson within the employee?s particular industry. The key, therefore, is whether the employee?s activities qualify as ?sales? in that industry.

Important factors: how your industry is structured, whether employees are hired with sales backgrounds and whether employees receive incentive pay as part of their pay packages.
?

The takeaway, if you don?t have outside salespersons

Broadly speaking, what a federal agency says about the law it administers goes. But not, according to the Court, when the announcement of a new interpretation is made for the first time in a legal brief. That?s not fair, the Court said, because employers have no warning of the change.

What counts as fair warning: In addition to revising official regulations and other administrative guidance, you can be put on notice if your entire in??dustry becomes the subject of FLSA investigations. Tip: It?s always a good idea to keep your ear to the ground. If DOL investigators are interested in other companies in your industry, you might be next.

Hal David, Legendary Songwriter, Dies At 91

LOS ANGELES ? Hal David, the stylish, heartfelt lyricist who teamed with Burt Bacharach on dozens of timeless songs for movies, television and a variety of recording artists in the 1960s and beyond, has died. He was 91.

David died of complications from a stroke Saturday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to his wife Eunice David.

He had suffered a major stroke in March and was stricken again on Tuesday, she said.

"Even at the end, Hal always had a song in his head," Eunice David said. "He was always writing notes, or asking me to take a note down, so he wouldn't forget a lyric."

Bacharach and David were among the most successful teams in modern history, with top 40 hits including "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," "(They Long to Be) Close to You" and "That's What Friends Are For." Although most associated with Dionne Warwick, their music was recorded by many of the top acts of their time, from the Beatles and Barbra Streisand to Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin. They won an Oscar for "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" (from the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"), Grammys and Tonys for the songs from the hit Broadway musical "Promises, Promises."

David joined the board of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in 1974 and served as president 1980 to 1986. He was head of the Songwriters Hall of Fame from 2001 to 2011, and was Chairman Emeritus at his death.

"As a lyric writer, Hal was simple, concise and poetic -- conveying volumes of meaning in fewest possible words and always in service to the music," ASCAP's current president, the songwriter Paul Williams, said in a statement. "It is no wonder that so many of his lyrics have become part of our everyday vocabulary and his songs... the backdrop of our lives."

In May, Bacharach and David received the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song during a White House tribute concert attended by President Barack Obama.

Bacharach, 83, thanked Obama, saying the award for his life's work topped even the Oscars and Grammys he won for individual projects. David could not attend because he was recovering from a stroke. Eunice David accepted on his behalf.

"It was thrilling," she said. "Even though he wasn't there, Hal said it was the highest honor he had ever received."

More than 55 years after their first songs hit the airwaves, Obama said "these guys have still got it." He noted their music is still being recorded by such artists as Alicia Keys and John Legend.

"Above all, they stayed true to themselves," Obama said. "And with an unmistakable authenticity, they captured the emotions of our daily lives ? the good times, the bad times, and everything in between."

David and Bacharach met when both worked in the Brill Building, New York's legendary Tin Pan Alley song factory where writers cranked out songs and attempted to sell them to music publishers. They scored their first big hit with "Magic Moments," a million-selling record for Perry Como.

In 1962 they began writing for a young singer named Dionne Warwick, whose versatile voice conveyed the emotion of David's lyrics and easily handled the changing patterns of Bacharach's melodies. Together the trio created a succession of popular songs including "Don't Make Me Over," "Walk On By," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," "Trains and Boats and Planes," "Anyone Who Has a Heart," "You'll Never Get to Heaven" and "Always Something There to Remind Me," a hit in the 1980s for the synth pop band Naked Eyes.

Bacharach and David also wrote hits for numerous other singers: "This Guy's in Love with You" (trumpeter Herb Alpert in his vocal debut), "Make It Easy on Yourself" (Jerry Butler), "What the World Needs Now is Love" (Jackie DeShannon) and "Wishin' and Hopin'" (Dusty Springfield). They also turned out title songs for the movies "What's New, Pussycat" (Tom Jones), "Wives and Lovers" (Jack Jones) and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" (Gene Pitney).

In a 1999 interview, David explained his success as a lyricist this way: "Try and tell a narrative. The songs should be like a little film, told in three or four minutes. Try to say things as simply as possible, which is probably the most difficult thing to do."

The writer, who lived in New York, often flew to Los Angeles, where he and Bacharach would hole up for a few weeks of intense songwriting. Sometimes they conferred by long-distance telephone; "I Say a Little Prayer" was written that way.

David would recall working on a song that seemed to go nowhere. They stuck it in a desk drawer and left it there for months.

"This was particularly disappointing to me. I had thought of the idea at least two years before showing it to Burt," David wrote in a brief essay on his Web site, . "I was stuck. I kept thinking of lines like, `Lord, we don't need planes that fly higher or faster ...' and they all seemed wrong. Why, I didn't know. But the idea stayed with me. http://www.haldavid.com

"Then, one day, I thought of, `Lord, we don't need another mountain,' and all at once I knew how the lyric should be written. Things like planes and trains and cars are man-made, and things like mountains and rivers and valleys are created by someone or something we call God. There was now a oneness of idea and language instead of a conflict. It had taken me two years to put my finger on it."

And so they had another smash: "What the World Needs Now is Love"

The hit-making team broke up after the 1973 musical remake of "Lost Horizon." They had devoted two years to the movie, only to see it scorned by critics and audiences alike. Bacharach became so depressed he sequestered himself in his vacation home and refused to work.

Bacharach and David sued each other and Warwick sued them both. The cases were settled out of court in 1979 and the three went their separate ways. They reconciled in 1992 for Warwick's recording of "Sunny Weather Lover."

David, meanwhile, went on to collaborate successfully with several other composers: John Barry with the title song of the James Bond film "Moonraker;" Albert Hammond with "To All the Girls I've Loved Before," which Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson sang as a duet; and Henry Mancini with "The Greatest Gift" in "The Return of the Pink Panther."

Born in New York City, David had attended public schools before studying journalism at New York University. He served in the Army during World War II, mostly as a member of an entertainment unit in the South Pacific. After the war, he worked as a copywriter at the New York Post, but music was his passion and he had written lyrics for Sammy Kaye, Guy Lombardo and other bandleaders before hooking up with Bacharach.

He married Anne Rauchman in 1947 and the couple had two sons.

(AP) ? Louis Oosthuizen knows what it's like to hit every shot right where he's aiming and to stand over every putt believing it will go in. He once shot a 57 on his home course at Mossel Bay in South Africa, a number he wears on the left sleeve of his shirt.

For about two hours Sunday in the Deutsche Bank Championship, that's how it felt.

Oosthuizen ran off seven straight birdies, a streak that began after he nearly three-putted from 5 feet. He shot 29 on the front nine of the TPC Boston. He didn't miss a green until the 17th hole. That's all it took to race by PGA champion Rory McIlroy, leave Tiger Woods behind and seize control going into the Labor Day finish.

Oosthuizen had an 8-under 63, establishing tournament records for consecutive birdies, low front nine and a 54-hole score of 19-under 194.

"Probably the start anyone would dream of on that front nine," Oosthuizen said. "I made everything, so you get those days where you just look at a putt and you hole it. That was my first nine holes."

The back nine wasn't bad, and it included one brief scare when he felt a twinge in his back when he went after a 9-iron on the 16th. The ache was gone on the 18th, and he rolled in one last birdie to keep McIlroy from getting even closer.

McIlroy, trying to match Woods with his third PGA Tour win this year, did well just to stay in range.

"You think going out with a one-shot lead and shooting 67 that you ... might still be in the lead going into the last day," McIlroy said. "But Louis put on a display out there for a few holes, reeling off seven birdies in a row. It was great to watch. Louis is the sort of player that can do that. He's very explosive and he didn't really put a foot wrong today. Very happy that I'm still in touching distance going into tomorrow."

Combine one of the sweetest swings in golf with a putting stroke that was just as pure, and that's what Oosthuizen is capable of doing. Remember, he won the British Open at St. Andrews in 2010 by seven shots.

Woods again didn't make as many putts as he thought he could, and even a short birdie on the 16th left him nervous until it curled in. He still managed a 68 and was six shots behind, along with Dustin Johnson, who kept alive his hopes of being picked for the Ryder Cup with a 65.

Oosthuizen's birdie streak featured four putts of at least 20 feet, including a 40-footer at No. 8. It reached a point that on a 20-foot birdie on the 11th for his eighth in a row, he was shocked when it didn't fall.

"Every putt had perfect speed," said Oosthuizen, who made four putts of at least 20 feet during his streak of birdies. "I told Rory, 'Sorry, but you've got to take it when you can.'"

The exchange they had on the 11th hole indicated what kind of performance this was.

Oosthuizen covered the flag on one of the toughest par 3s at the TPC Boston, though the ball settled 20 feet behind the cup and he narrowly missed. McIlroy followed with a beautiful swing of his own, a towering shot that drew gently and stopped 6 feet behind the cup for birdie.

McIlroy waited at the back of the green for Oosthuizen to tap in for par, held out his arm and clinched his fist and said to him, "I've got the honors." They laughed, exchanged a high-five and McIlroy told him as they headed to the 12th tee, "I feel like I've got a chance."

Woods was never in the picture, though he is not out of the hunt.

He got off to a slow start, not picking up a birdie until the fifth hole, but came on late with back-to-back birdies to stay in the game. He'll play the final round with Johnson, who twice made bogey with a 9-iron in hand and still had eight birdies on the day.

Keegan Bradley, who made the cut on the number, also had a 63 and while he won't be a factor at 13 shots behind, Bradley and Oosthuizen showed that it can be done. Six years ago, Woods shot 63 in the final round to beat Vijay Singh.

"I'm going to have to put together one of those rounds," Woods said. "It won't surprise me if somebody shoots 8- or 9-under par tomorrow because of where the pin locations are. Somebody is going to go out there and do it. It may be early, it may be late, who knows? But hopefully, I'm one of those guys."

Bryce Molder, who is No. 93 in the FedEx Cup, had a 68 and was tied for fifth with Ryan Moore (70), eight shots behind. The position on the leaderboard is more significant to Molder than how many shots he is behind, for only the top 70 in the FedEx Cup advance to Indianapolis next week for the third playoff event.

Even so, it was hard not to ignore the separation from Oosthuizen.

"I never saw what he did. I just remember looking up and going, 'Wait a minute. I'm like eight or 10 back.' I thought I'm playing pretty well," Molder said.

He was, and so where other players. Oosthuizen was in a class by himself, especially considering he was in the last group after the sun had baked the course most of the day until clouds and a light rain arrived for the final few holes.

Brandt Snedeker, also trying to get the attention of Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III, had a 30 on the back nine and finished with an eagle for a 65, putting him in a tie for second. Snedeker was the runner-up last week at The Barclays. Love will announce his four picks Tuesday morning in New York.

"I'm pleased," Snedeker said. "The only thing missing is a win. I think Davis wants me to go out there and try to win. I came close last week, a little frustrated with the way I finished last week, but this week I've still got a chance. This is kind of where I make my hay, when I'm out of it."

He didn't imagine being 10 shots behind.

Oosthuizen thought about a 59 when he his approach into 2 feet on the 10th. He would have needed four birdies over the last eight holes, including a par 5 he could reach in two shots. But he missed four straight birdie putts inside 20 feet, and then took his bogey on the 17th.

Not that he's going to lose sleep over a 63. In fact, Oosthuizen figures it might be just as well he didn't break 60. The idea is to win the tournament, and McIlroy figures to make it tough on him Monday.

"I think it would have been really tough playing tomorrow shooting in the 50s today," Oosthuizen said. "So I'm very happy with my 8 under today."

Flashback to 2001: How Far Can Facebook Shares Fall Before They Can't Fall Any Lower?

Facebook's stock performance since IPO

I?m having a flashback, and it?s Mark Zuckerberg?s fault. OK, not exactly the fault of?Facebook?s cofounder and CEO, but his company?s stock.

The swoon in Facebook?s shares, culminating in a close today at less than half their IPO price, brought back memories of what feels like (but may or may not be) a similar situation I observed a decade or so ago in the wake of the dot-com bust. I was covering Amazon.com during its period of rapid expansion, when it was far from apparent to everyone that it would survive, let alone turn into a blockbuster business.

Amazon.com?s shares?which went public at $18, as it happens the price to which Facebook?s shares fell today?had dipped below $6 a share in late 2001. Amazon had huge costs from building out massive warehouses around the country well ahead of its level of revenues, prompting one analyst to predict that Amazon would go under?unless it changed its expansionist ways.

It was the one time I remember wishing that I weren?t prohibited by BusinessWeek rules from buying stocks of companies I wrote about. Having reported on the company for several years and knowing how the economics of its business worked, I was pretty darn sure Amazon wasn?t going under and that founder and CEO Jeff Bezos knew exactly what he was doing.

July 10, 2000 cover story

And he did. Thanks to his vision coupled with a determination to stay the course while adjusting for market changes along the way, Amazon is now trading at $248 a share. A mere 100 shares bought then would have realized 40-fold return for a pre-commission, pretax profit of $24,200.

I don?t yet have the same feeling about Facebook?s stock that I had about Amazon?s back then. At $18, Facebook?s market cap is still nearly $40 billion for a business that may do $5 billion in revenues this year. I have no idea whether Facebook?s a buy, hold or sell, and with the possible exception of some people at or associated with Facebook, maybe no one does.

Although I?m reporting on and writing about Facebook about as much as I did about Amazon, I still can?t tell you whether?Facebook executives and engineers have yet come up with the ad formats or alternative business models that would support an Amazon-like phoenix routine. For that matter, I don?t know for sure whether Facebook, which is after all a large and profitable company already, even needs to do anything but execute on current opportunities whose potential most people don?t yet understand.

Not to draw too close a parallel for two very different companies in very different businesses and times, but once again?we have an analyst who has doubts about Facebook?s future, if not its survival, this time suggesting Facebook is worth no more than $15 a share. What?s more, a prominent market researcher just whacked $1 billion off its estimate of Facebook?s revenues this year thanks to slowing growth. And a lot more shares of insiders will be eligible to be sold in coming months, potentially depressing the stock price further.

I know it?s logically meaningless to compare stock prices of two different companies without taking share count and many other factors into account. Nonetheless, round numbers hold a certain power. If Facebook falls to around $5 like Amazon did?and honestly, that still seems a stretch?I think some people will start having the same feeling I had in 2001. Then it will be up to Mark Zuckerberg to show he?s another Jeff Bezos or ? well, one of those fallen dot-com stars whose names none of us can remember.
